YEUNG Ka-wah, Alexandra
Born in Hong Kong, Alexandra Yeung Ka-Wah grew up shuttling back and forth between Canada and Hong Kong. An active athlete throughout her youth, she participated in multiple sports including field hockey, ice hockey, athletics and tennis. While pursuing her engineering degree at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, she discovered mountain biking just as it was taking off as a new global sport. She competed in early races in Canada and the US during this time.
Upon returning to Hong Kong after completing her degree, she put her bike aside to focus on her profession. Fate would have her participate in a local mountain bike race and one thing led to another, culminating with Alexe joining the cycling team as a full-time athlete. As the only female team member at the time, Alexe was able to cross-train and compete in multiple Asian Championships and Asian Games in all cycling disciplines – on the track, road and mountain bike. She placed 4th in the World Track “B” Championships and 4th in the Asian Games for mountain bike. Her most notable achievement was qualifying for the 2000 Sydney Olympics as one of the top 30 female mountain bikers in the world, becoming the first female to represent Hong Kong in cycling. She is happy to see the standard of Hong Kong’s cycling, particularly women’s cycling, come such a long way since the 1990s.
She currently resides in the US and works in the technology sector. However, she still finds the most joy in teaching mountain bike to adults as it always, without fail, brings the widest smiles to everyone’s faces.
