Theophilus Chan Ming Tai is a long jump athlete. He became a full-time athlete in 2015, training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, and from 2013 to 2016, he broke the Hong Kong record a total of 8 times. At 21 years old in 2016 he jumped a personal best of 8.12m, and participated in his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Theo Chan started his journey as an athlete in the same way most Hong Kong kids still do, trying everything everywhere all at once. Before focusing on athletics, he tried his hand at ballet, trampoline, badminton, swimming, aquathlon, cross country running, etc. Finally, after enjoying a taste of success despite being the shortest, scrawniest boy at almost all his competitions, Theo settled on the long jump.
Training with young coach Chan Wai Yin, famous for her tough, no-nonsense attitude and an early attention to developing young athletes’ form and foundational skills, along with Theo’s persistence and commitment, proved to be a winning formula. Theo made great strides in his personal best each year, with the most dramatic improvement of 34 centimetres from 7.30m to 7.64m while also preparing for the HKDSE in his final year as a secondary student.
This leap paved the way for Theo to become a full-time athlete. In 2013, he embarked on the ambitious ‘8 Meters Project’ with the Hong Kong Sports Institute while continuing his studies at the University of Hong Kong.
At the 2016 Asian Indoor Championships in Doha he won the bronze medal with a jump of 7.85m. At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Theo ranked 17 with the jump of 7.79m, 6cm away from entering the final. He is the second ever Hong Kong long jumper representing Hong Kong. At the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar he won the silver medal with a jump of 8.03m. At the 2017 Asian Indoor Games in Ashgabat he won the bronze medal with a jump of 7.44m. At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta Indonesia Theo participated in both long jump and 4x100m relay, finished 7th at the final of 4x100m.
Theo Chan is currently hard at work in Paris, training with a French coach with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
