WONG, Kam Po

Wong Kam Po,  known as Ah Po, is a professional racing cyclist who is born and bred in Hong Kong. He spent his childhood in a tranquil neighbourhood of Sha Tin Lek Yuen Estate and started pursuing his athletic dream at the age of 17. In 1990, he joined the Hong Kong Cycling Team and won his first championship at the Asian Junior Cycling Competition. In 1994, he ranked 4th at the Hiroshima Asian Games Road Race, which was a place that no one else ever achieved in the Hong Kong team. This inspired his confidence and has since boosted his spirit to aim for the gold medals.

As he trained to become the top cyclist in Hong Kong, he devoted to a full-time sports career for 20 years. His absolute dedication would lead him to forego opportunities to spend time with his family during Lunar New Year and all the other important life events.

Through years of hard work and discipline he established himself as one of the top cyclists in Asia. He is best known for being a 3 times Gold Medallist at the 13th, 15th and 16th Asian Games. Not only that, he pushed himself to the international world and represented Hong Kong in the Olympic Games for five times. This made him the first Chinese male cyclist in Olympic history in 1996. With such outstanding performances, he won his first gold medal in the Men’s individual Road Race at the National Games of the People's Republic of China in 1997.

In 2007 at Palma de Mallorca Spain, he claimed his first international victory at the UCI Track Cycling World Championship – Men’s Scratch and earned himself the rainbow jersey, a much coveted trophy of every cyclist in their professional career.

Being the leading road cyclist in the country, he was awarded the title of Hong Kong Sports Stars multiple times. In 2006, 2007 and 2010, Wong Kam Po received the highest commendations and was honoured “Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars” at the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong.

After retiring from cycling, he is now working as a coach in SF&OC Sports Legacy Company Limited to cultivate sports in Hong Kong.
