Influenced by his family since he was a child, Ah Cheung began to learn swimming at the age of 9. At first, his father taught him breaststroke, and coaches in swimming clubs taught other strokes step by step. Although the process was difficult, he still enjoyed the learning process and practicing with other teammates.

Ah Cheung joined the junior squad at the age of 12. In 1986, he represented Hong Kong to participate in the first overseas age group swim meet at the Tokyo Swimming Center in Japan. Together with other teammates, they beat other Japanese swimming clubs and became champions in both freestyle and medley relays.

After winning the titles, he returned to Hong Kong, continued to have intensive training and other local and overseas competitions. Ah Cheung represented Hong Kong in major international Games and Championships in early 90s, including Commonwealth Games held in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990, Asian Games in Beijing, China, Asian Swimming Championships in Hiroshima, Japan in 1992 and Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.

After the Olympic Games, he briefly left his career as a swimmer due to further education. Until 1997, he participated in the Univerisade held in Sicily, Italy and was a flag bearer on behalf of Hong Kong at the opening ceremony.

Due to his work, he has participated in the Universiade as a swimming coach for the University Sports Frederation of Hong Kong in various years, including Bangkok, Thailand in 2007, Shenzhen, China in 2011, and Kazan, Russia, in 2013.
